Mu-an Tea House

Nestled in a corner of our Japanese garden that reflects the changing seasons stands the majestic tea house Mu-an. During your garden stroll, we invite you to enjoy matcha and traditional Japanese sweets in this serene setting.  We offer two experiences: "Teicha" (casual tea service), available for walk-ins, and "Otemae" (formal tea ceremony), which requires advance reservation and features a live tea ceremony performed by our staff.  For the tea service, matcha prepared in our tea room is served at table-style seating (Ryurei-seki). For the tea ceremony, you may choose between table-style seating (Ryurei-seki) or traditional tatami seating in our spacious tea room (Hiroma).  Immerse yourself in Japanese culture as the seasons unfold around you.

About Tea House Mu-an

About Tea House Mu-an

The history of Tea House Mu-an began when Fusanosuke Kuhara, a prominent businessman and the owner of the Happo-en estate at the time, relocated an entire tea house to this site. The original structure was built by Heihachi Tanaka, a merchant active from the late Edo period through the early Meiji era. Kuhara was an avid tea enthusiast who cherished this tea house while preserving its original character. He invited tea masters from Kyoto to reside on the premises and added the current table-style seating area (Ryurei-seki) over what was originally an earthen floor space. The refined tastes and dedication of both Heihachi Tanaka, the original owner, and Fusanosuke Kuhara, the subsequent owner, can still be seen today in details such as the ceiling of the main tea room (Hiroma) and the table in the Ryurei-seki area. We invite you to enjoy a moment of tranquility at Tea House Mu-an, where you can feel the legacy of history passed down through generations.
